A recent report suggests that a cyberattack occurs approximately every 39 seconds.
The rise in cyber attacks has highlighted a significant skills gap in the industry, with ransomware, phishing, account hacking, and identity theft all continuing to hinder business operations.
According to a CIO survey by Gartner, 66% of respondents planned to increase investment in cybersecurity, with government agencies needing well-trained and well-equipped staff to protect their networks and systems. However, with the private and public sectors competing for top talent, there is a shortage of cyber experts to meet the demand. Meanwhile, current cybersecurity professionals are overwhelmed with heavy workloads that have only increased in tandem with cyberattacks.
To address this issue, the US Office of Personnel Management (OPM) suggests that the government must close the skills gap and hire IT/cyber talent to strengthen cyber defense, recommending the use of automation, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML) to empower cybersecurity professionals with the right tools to augment their skills and address talent gaps.
Robotic process automation (RPA) and AI can offer cybersecurity teams with intelligent self-service in repetitive tasks, allowing them to focus on other, more complicated processes. This significantly reduces the pressure on cybersecurity teams, enabling them to respond to threats faster. In addition, AI and ML can enhance pattern recognition in data, enabling security systems to learn from experience and reduce incident response times. This approach will allow cybersecurity analysts to achieve more accurate results while shortening the skills gap.
